IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11 character code that the Reserve Bank of India assigns to each bank branch taking part in electronic money transfers. You need it to send money by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS, and many banks ask for it when you add a payee.

The code is easy to read once you know the parts. The first four letters are the bank, for example SBIN for State Bank of India. The fifth character is always a zero. The final six characters identify the exact branch. A MICR code is separate: it is the 9 digit number at the foot of a cheque used for cheque clearing.
